Beginning of Term
We look forward to welcoming pupils back to school on Thursday 2nd September at 8:55.
Class 2 Sleepover
Class 2 had a wonderful time on their sleepover recently. They prepared their own meal, built a campfire, Hunted for treasure and minibeasts, tackled the adventure playground and made their own flying bugs! It was a wonderful two days in which Y2 and 3 really built their independence and learnt about themselves and each other.
Bradley Primary School Visit
Class 3 welcomed their pen pals from Bradley Primary School in Nelson, near Burnley, this week. It was a great day where new friendships were made. Pupils enjoyed making aboriginal art tiles and playing a cricket tournament together. See the gallery for pictures.
Activity Week
Activity week is in full flow, and our pupils' creative juices are running wild! They have enjoyed archery, circus skills, football coaching, traditional games (watch that welly!), urban dance, orienteering and King James's annual Sports Day. It is not over yet, with the following activities to come:
Thursday- World Cup inspired African art, flag making (for Sports Day), creating a World Cup song, Sports Day
Friday- Percussion workshops, parachute games, Culture Shock festival for Class 3.
It has been a fantastic week so far and pupils have developed skills that they didn't even know they had! Pictures to follow.
FairTrade Tuck Shop
On Friday, the chair and vice chair of our Healthy School Group launched Goldsborough's very own FairTrade tuck shop. It sells FairTrade fruit, cereal bars and fruit juice treats whilst helping to raise awareness of the need to pay workers around the world fairly.
Once upon a time...
Class 2 pupils have been busy designing and making puppets as part of their Fairy Stories topic this week. They were extremely careful when sewing the edges and have put some fantastic detail onto each one to really bring them to life! Their next task is to plan stories with them to tell to our younger pupils.
No hung parliament in Goldsborough!
Goldsborough pupils held their very own general election recently and we are delighted to report that there was a clear winner. After setting up their political parties, choosing a name and deciding on a logo, each group decided on their election manifesto and then debated their values and ideas in 'parliament' (Class 3's room). Each party then presented their campaign speech to the school, who all voted, and there were no queues when it came to deadline time. The majority needed to avoid a hung parliament was 3, so the Orange Party were delighted to win Goldsborough CE Primary School's General Election by 7 votes!
Our Trip to Bradford by Anna and Fionn in Class 2
Lat Tuesday, Class 3 and Class 2 went to Bradford Imax Centre. First, we watched a space film in 3D. After that, we did one activity each. Then we had our lunch and we only had 20 minutes to eat it! The best part of the trip was the 3D film because we had to wear cool 3D glasses and they looked like skiing glasses!
New Signage
You may have noticed that our school grounds have received a face lift over the half term break. We now have two brand new noticeboards, welcome signs on each of the gates and a fantastic new main sign on the school building.
Eco Schools Award
We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded the Bronze 'Eco Schools' Award! Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey. Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community it is the pupils that decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to do it. Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme, providing schools with all the evidence they need to really shout about their environmental success. Our next step is to achieve the silver award! Well done to JAcob and Lauren (our Eco Committee chair and vice chair) and everyone for their contributions to our school's sustainability!
Fundraising to help victims of the Haiti Earthquake
We had a non-uniform day to raise money for those affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti. Everyone brought a donation and we raised a fabulous £325.93 for the Disasters Emergency Committee! This included a tremendous £129 raised from the raffle organised by Holly and Maria- well done girls!
Problem Solving Exercises
A group of year 6 pupils are taking part in maths problem solving exercises at Hampsthwaite school for the next 5 weeks. A teacher from St. Aidan's C of E school is taking the sessions. All the pupils are finding this an exciting challenge.
Change of date- Open Afternoon- now taking place on Tuesday March 2nd.
Unfortunately, we have had to change the date of the Open Afternoon this term, originally scheduled for Monday March 1st. This will now take place the following day, Tuesday March 2nd. The reason for this change is that Y6 are now out of school all afternoon on the 1st at the Crucial Crew event. As this arrangement involves our pupils and pupils from Meadowside Primary School, it was not possible to alter this date, which was confirmed after the Diary Dates letter went out on Friday. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.
Knaresborough Rotary Club Young Photographer of the Year
The Knaresborough Rotary Club are running a photography competition for the young people of the Knaresborough area. Their posters says:
Can YOU produce a photograph about the environment? You will not need fancy equipment, a mobile phone will be adequate. Computer enhancement not allowed. We are looking for your artistic interpretation, not technical ability. Ideally, your photograph should be accompanied by a 50 word explanation.
Would you like to produce an entry? During this snowy weather, it could be the ideal time to capture a fantastic photograph of some of the beautiful sights around where you live. Mr Shillito will give you more information about how to submit your entry when you come back to school but in the meantime, get snapping! Your photograph could be of anything to do with our environment- be creative and look for that great shot! Stray FM are also asking for your snow photos; go to their website www.strayfm.com to upload your best photograph.
The closing date for the competition is the end of January, but the snow might not be here then...
Eco Day
Pupils from all classes enjoyed a fantastic Eco Day this week, organised by Miss Sanderson and the Eco Committee. Everyone was very busy making draught excluders from old tights and shredded paper and windmills throughout the day as well as trying to get through the afternoon without using any electricity. (We were all glad that it was sunny outside!)
Climate Summit
Our chair and vice chair of the community group, Jacob and Lauren, attended the Mock Climate Summit at Ripon Cathedral this week. They were fantastic ambassadors for our school in the way they contributed their views, stood up and presented in front of lots of other pupils, teachers and even an MP! They presented Mr David Curry, MP for Ripon and Skipton with Class 3's climate change messages to take to the House of Commons. Listen out for an interview with Jacob on Radio York on Friday 4th December!
Maths Challenge Morning
Some of our Class 3 pupils visited St Aidan's High School this week to carry out some challenging maths tasks. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning, came back to school with very interesting looking 3-D graphs and full tummies from having visited the school's award winning restaurant!
Front Page News!
Goldsborough news made the front page of the Knaresborough Post this week! Our picture, which shows off our brand new guided reading books, purchased with FROGS money, was the featured front page article, which made us all very proud (particularly Joshua, Megan and Charlotte who were in the picture!) See the article online at http://www.knaresboroughpost.co.uk/knaresborough/FROGS-leap-into-action-to.5841451.jp
Rotary Club Concert, King James' School- by Catherine and Rebecca, Class 3
Last Saturday, some children from different schools went to the Rotary Club Concert at King James' School. We sang a selection of songs from the musical 'Oliver'. These were 'Food, Glorious Food' , 'I'd Do Anything', and 'Consider Yourself'. We had lots of fun. We ended up singing 'Consider Yourself' twice because we weren't loud enough! There were lots of musical instruments playing, as well as us singing. All in all, we had a great time!
Class One Visit Knaresborough Library
Reception and Year one had a trip out of class to Knaresborough Library on Monday afternoon. They went to see a performance of "Commotion in the Ocean". They all had the opportunity to join in and play a variety of different instruments. A really good time was had by all the class and the parents!
Songs for St Wilfrid
Class 3 pupils took part in the 'Songs for St Wilfrid' performance at Ripon Cathedral. They sang beautifully and were a credit to themselves and our school. Below are some photos of the children performing.
Learning Logs
Homework will never be the same again! This year, we have started doing our homework in a new and exciting way. It is called Learning Logs and it involves the pupils deciding how they want to present their homework to show their understanding and learning. There have already been some fantastic pieces of learning log work in all three classes. Look out for some examples on the website soon.
