Autumn Term Sporting Events – Part 1

After the end of the summer term and again winning the Small Schools Trophy for the third year in a row, our children were as eager as ever to attend their first event.

Sportshall Athletics – 20th September

The school sporting calendar always commences with the Sportshall Athletics at Rossett Sports Centre in Harrogate.  This is quite a big event with 18 of our pupils attending, ranging from year 4 to 6.  It is fast paced and incorporates running races, relays, obstacle relays, high jump, standing long jumps, standing triple jumps, javelin and speed bounce.  All our pupils did an amazing job, coming second overall.  Although special mention must go to our girls, who at this event were phenomenal!

Year 5/6 Small Schools Mixed Football Tournament – 27th September

The mixed football tournaments are always popular events with both the boys and girls at Goldsborough.  Our goalie for this tournament was Jeorgia Blackshaw Howell who also goal keeps for Scotton Scorchers.

It was a very large tournament, with 2 pools and 12 schools attending.  We had some superb matches against Kettlesing, All Saints, Beckwithshaw and Birstwith and our team of Ewan Bishop, William Harwood, Jackson Shoesmith, Jay McCarthy, Mac Hamilton, Joseph Mattocks and Jeorgia played some superb football.  Unfortunately we didn’t win this time, but had a lot of fun trying!

Knaresborough Swimming Gala – 5th October

The Swimming gala this year had 10 teams participating from surrounding schools .  Due to some of the bigger schools attending, we normally come around 7 or 8th.  However this year, it was all to change!   What a fantastic, fun and competitive morning we had.  Our swimmers were from years, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and consisted of Jay, Wil Harwood, Jeorgia, Evie, Kitty, Noah, Isla, Lily Howliston, Amelia Mitchell, Charlie Mason, Owen Teale and Jackson.

The morning started with a few nerves from our younger children!  Knaresborough pool is heaving with people and the noise is deafening!  However, these soon wore off, comforted by our older, more seasoned swimmers!  The morning swam past in a blur of backstroke, breaststroke, front crawl, splashes and cheering.    We could hardly believe it, we seemed to be winning most of our races and finally when the totals were added up, we found that we had come second and therefore through to the Area Grand Finals at the Hydro.  Our swimmers were ecstatic and deservedly so, what an amazing result and a first for Goldsborough!

Year 3/4 Mixed Football – 9th October

Our year 3/4 mixed football team are very competitive and most of them play outside of school for their own teams.  For this tournament we had 3 girls and 5 boys, Louis Darleston, Lily Howliston, Jackson Shoesmith, Owen Teale, Noah Staiano, Freddie Robinson, Jessica Smith and Amelia Mitchell.

There were 12 big schools involved in the tournament, with two pools.  The winner from each pool playing against each other and going through to the final.  Goldsborough drew one match and won the rest, with some super goals from Noah and Owen, meaning that we won our pool.

Our last match was against the winners of pool A, St Peters, who in fact beat us.  Although we gave it our best shot, we were up against an excellent team and better on the day.  However, we came away feeling very happy and are now looking forward to the final

Grand District Final Swimming Gala – Tuesday 17th October

We went by school minibus to the Hydro for the final with the same excited team that got through the Knaresborough round except for Freddie Robinson who stepped into Jackson’s place in his absence.  The Hydro was a totally different atmosphere to Knaresborough swimming pool, being so much bigger and therefore noisier!  There were 16 schools competing, most of them big schools! However, our team showed little nerves, knowing what to expect this time. Noah was in the very first race and calmly executed an immaculate backstroke coming second in his heat.

The rest of the afternoon went by in a splash!  Our team coming a very respectable 9th overall which we were all delighted with.  Our swimmers should be very proud of their achievement and their excellent swimming throughout the tournament.

Year 3 and 4  Small Schools Mixed Football – Rossett Sports Centre

The Small Schools Events are always very popular and this was no exception with 11 other small schools competing for the Year 3 and 4 Mixed Football title.

Our team were in Pool B and won all the matches.  Although all our players did their part, special mention must go to Lily Howliston who kept on scoring goal after goal! She was phenomenal!

In the playoff we played against Killinghall, who beat us fairly 2 :0 meaning we were runners up. Again a brilliant score and a great afternoon of football with super support from our parents.
